This article will look at Venus retrograde 2018 from the standpoint of Evolutionary Astrology, which focuses upon karma, past lives and the soul’s evolution. Typically, love/romance, finances and the arts are all highlighted when Venus goes retrograde, but this article will be focusing specifically on love matters. In Evolutionary Astrology, we also assign personal value systems and self-esteem to Venus, so these issues will have impact on relationships at this time, too.
Venus will be retrograde from October 5, 2018 (UT) to November 16, 2018 and will travel between 25 degrees Libra to 10 degrees Scorpio. If you have planets between those degrees, then this retrograde will be important for you. And karmic and past life themes will be especially significant if you were born at the tail end of the Pluto in Libra generation, or near the beginning of the Pluto in Scorpio Generation–between November 1981 and September 1988. If you belong to this group, transiting Venus will be retrograding over your natal Pluto, which will catalyze karmic situations and promote some intense soul growth for you.
Venus Retrograde — A Difficult Time?
Before you start panicking about the word “retrograde,” note that Evolutionary Astrology does not view Venus Retrograde as a particularly disruptive time. According to Jeffrey Wolf Green (JWG), the founder of Evolutionary Astrology, Venus retrograde is not usually tumultuous. Rather, it is an opportune time to re-address old relationship issues that you thought you had already left behind. It is time to re-visit some previous relationship dynamics and see if you have mastered them in a healthy way. If you are not pleased with what you find, then it is a good time to think about making some changes.
However, this year’s Venus retrograde begins in the sign of Scorpio, which does not exactly shy away from deep and intense subjects. So yes, you might feel challenged at times and might be prompted to do some intense soul-searching. The Scorpio influence means that it will be time to reassess and wrestle with old issues pertaining to sex, intimacy, jealousy, obsession, betrayal or abandonment. Since the retrograde also takes place partly in Venus’s own sign of Libra, this retrograde period will also speak to social situations and socializing with an emphasis on equality and fairness. Issues might arise that require you to re-assess appropriate levels of giving, sharing, listening and compromise in all of your relationships.
Changing Values, Changing Needs
According to JWG, your personal values can change during a Venus retrograde. And once Venus goes direct again, you will begin to act on those new values. Venus will provide you with an awareness of new needs and a new perspective on what is counterproductive in your relationships. You might become aware of something you need to let go of in order to move forward in your life. Remember though, during the retrograde period, it is time to pause and reflect on your relationships, not to strive forward in an ambitious way or attempt to take action. So re-assess your relationship when Venus is retrograde but take action later, after Venus goes direct.
Karma and Past Life Relationships
There is a strong emphasis on karma during a retrograde Venus period. Note that karma does not automatically mean “punishment.” Karma simply means the outcome of previous actions, whether good, bad, or neutral. Venus Retrograde periods can help you understand the results of your previous choices and actions, and whether those choices and actions were in alignment with your true path in life.
Past lives are often highlighted during Venus retrograde periods, too. If you meet a new love interest during this time, the universe might be providing you with someone who can help you begin to resolve a past life issue. In some cases, this person might actually be someone you were romantically tangled up with in a previous lifetime. But whether or not they are from another lifetime (and whether or not you are single or involved with someone) Venus retrograde is still a great time to deal with old relationship baggage that has been dragging behind you for a while.
This particular Venus retrograde is especially significant for potentially creating karma, thanks to Venus squaring the transiting lunar nodal axis. This will take place around October 30th and Nov. 28th. (For details about those dates, see below). Full of good intentions, many of us might jump the gun and try to get ahead of ourselves, causing a situation where we will have to backtrack later and repeat the whole experience because we skipped a vital emotional process within ourselves (resulting in what Evolutionary Astrologers call “skipped-steps”). So try not to take emotional shortcuts when addressing relationship issues or you will have to just face the issue again later on.
What Else to Expect? A Few Highlights:
This particular retrograde might start off with a confrontation, as Venus squares Mars on October 11, 2018. Intense passions might cause conflict. An old argument is revived–one that first started around September 8th. Venus wants deep intimacy and meaningful romantic encounters, but Mars wants space. Mars is out for exciting and novel experiences or group activities with friends and is not really into the one-on-one thing. This cosmic conflict could get played out in your relationship or in your sex life. Perhaps one partner wants to try something new…and instead of feeling excited about the prospect, the other partner might just feel secretly hurt, betrayed or jealous. Money matters (especially joint banking) might also be a source of conflict. It is time to pause and reflect on how you are responding to these issues. Old relationship wounds are asking to be addressed and healed.
Venus squares the transiting lunar nodal axis in Leo/Aquarius on October 30th. Time to beware of creating karma due to skipped-steps. Issues arise regarding jealousy, mistrust, betrayal, sex and/or fear of abandonment. (This is especially true for you if you are from the Pluto in Scorpio generation.) You might be tempted to act distant or avoid taking a risk but instead of withdrawing or passively drifting along in the relationship, it is important to use your will now and put effort into creating the heartfelt relationship connections you want — especially ones that are full of the Leo hallmarks: playfulness, fun, joy and loyalty. This issue began brewing back around September 16th, and it resurfaces now for another look. If you are feeling completely stuck and nothing seems to be working, you might have to go back and heal some old relationship trauma first.
Venus opposes Uranus on October 31st —your partner might do something totally unexpected or off-the-wall, causing you to see them (or your previous conflicts) in a different light. Once the initial shock wears off, you might feel more conciliatory as the days go by because you are now better able to understand your partner’s point of view, with a little help from Venus travelling through Libra.
With Venus opposing Uranus in Taurus and forming a quincunx with Chiron in Aries, the pull toward freedom and independence will be strong throughout the retrograde period, even within a committed relationship. Some people will find themselves entertaining thoughts about cutting loose and going it alone. Or your partner might be voicing these thoughts. (Try not to panic if these thoughts are surfacing now. It does not necessarily mean The End of the relationship. Keep reading…)
Add to this the fact that ancient hurts from the past keep coming up, forcing you to have to constantly respond to them in a way that is irritating and uncomfortable. It might be one of those situations that cannot be fixed in a tidy or satisfying way, but simply tolerated for now. You sense that your situation requires healing but you also know it will not likely come about in an easy way or without a lot of adjustment on your part. You might also be feeling “not good enough” or a sense of lack because someone or something makes you feel left out or has you adopting the victim role. This situation might be particularly noticeable around Nov 3 (with an echo of the situation happening on Nov. 28)
However, Venus’ sextile to Saturn will probably keep you both committed to the relationship despite any challenges you face. Saturn will help you both be willing to deal with your relationship in a mature, practical and responsible fashion, and to hang in for the long term. You might notice this especially around Oct 24 but this influence will be active during the whole retrograde period.
And the good news is that the whole story seems to have a happy ending because Venus trines Mars on Nov 9, showing that previous arguments seem to have been resolved somewhat — now there appears to be room for BOTH individual freedoms AND partnership, self-satisfying ventures AND compromise, exciting changes AND fairness in how the changes are implemented.
Venus goes direct on Nov 16, and will take a number of weeks to climb out of the shadow zone. During the weeks after Nov. 16, you might see some of the earlier themes repeating one more time, as they seek resolution. This time, however, you will feel more ready to take action on what you have learned and to move forward and make progress in all your relationship matters.
And just because the Universe has a sense of humor, Mercury goes Retrograde a few hours after Venus turns direct on November 16th. So if you still need more time to think and plan before taking action on your new values, you will certainly get that if you want it!
While Venus slowly climbs out of the shadow zone, the potential to create karma due to skipped-steps is once again strong on November 28th as Venus squares the Lunar nodes, this time in Cancer/Capricorn. We need to take time out from our work duties and other responsibilities in order to nurture our relationships now. The world will not end if you take time off of work now. Drop rigidity and be willing to be a little vulnerable with your partner. Let your heart show. If not, you will end up having to repeat this issue at a later date. Also, avoiding conflict is not worth it if it means you have to compromise your own truth now. Try to address issues relating to fairness or equality. Doing either more or less than your fair share could be problematic now. This might particularly be the case if you are born in the Pluto in Libra generation.
Saturn seems to have the last word in this retrograde story — Venus will aspect him for the 3rd time on December 16th as she finally exits the shadow zone. So Saturn will be the glue that keeps most relationships together and on track while you work out whatever needs to be worked out.
Note that the key word here is “most” relationships. While it takes a heck of a lot more than a Venus retrograde transit to break up a relationship, if you do have other challenging things going on in your chart at this time, you might come to the practical conclusion that it would be better for the relationship to end. In this case, the Venus retrograde period should make this clear to you in ways that you could not see before and make you more confident in your decision. Saturn is great for motivating us to make long-term plans, and he will help you to plot a realistic and practical course for your future, whether that future is with a partner or on an individual path of your own making. ♥
